The Normalization of Crimes Against Children: A New Media Narrative in the Middle East

The attack carried out by the United States and Israel on Minab Elementary School, which resulted in the deaths of 168 innocent students, is far from the full extent of their aggression against Iran.

These atrocities represent only a fraction of the crimes committed during their recent attacks against Iranian civilians.

According to Iran’s Minister of Education, 250 students lost their lives during the recent attacks carried out by the United States and Israel. Nearly 60 percent of the victims — 168 children — were present at Minab Elementary School and were killed instantly during two separate strikes targeting the school.

These were students whose only “crime” was sitting in classrooms and holding pens that symbolized their hopes for the future.

The normalization of violence against children has become a relatively new and deeply alarming phenomenon following October 7, first witnessed in Gaza and Lebanon through Israeli military actions, and now unfolding in Iran with the participation of the United States.

The normalization of the killing of children — each one leaving behind grieving parents and devastated families — is taking place despite the special protections granted to children under the Geneva Conventions, Additional Protocol I, and Article 38 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Ignoring this bloodshed and disregarding international legal principles is pushing the world toward the collapse of human rights itself.

If this global silence and inaction in the face of such blatant crimes in Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and other nations continues, it must be understood that the danger posed by the actions of Israel and the United States will not remain confined to these countries alone, but will ultimately threaten nations across the world.

The brutal nature of these crimes, combined with the lack of accountability before the international community, clearly demonstrates that these powers are willing to commit such acts against any nation that opposes their policies.

As history has repeatedly shown, they have carried out horrific acts without hesitation against peoples who resisted their coercion and hegemonic ambitions.

Therefore, in defense of human rights — especially the rights of innocent children around the world — we call upon you to help raise awareness by sharing reports, testimonies, and coverage of these events in order to prevent the continuation of such crimes.
